Sudah*

When Sudah and her family made the decision to change support worker providers to a larger company, they were concerned that the transition could be problematic. They asked me about the best way to help the new carers learn about Sudah’s unique needs and preferences. We made a plan detailing the most important skills to get right. I ran several group skills training sessions during which we focused on eating and food safety, bathing and hygiene including safe transitions in the wet areas, and on Sudah’s interests and how to facilitate them. I also organised a joint training session with Sudah’s Speech Pathologist in order to focus on how to facilitate Sudah’s use of her speech generating device alongside Sudah’s other equipment and needs, so that she will have access to her device in all the areas of her home, as well as out and about in the community. The new staff were keen to learn best practice skills and how to aid Sudah in the way that is most consistent and comfortable for her. Sudah and her family felt well supported through the process and are happy to report that the new staff are doing a great job.

“Thank you Larissa!”
